IEC 2024 Seasonal Intern

Brooklyn, NY, and field locations throughout Metropolitan New York area

The Interstate Environmental Commission seeks seasonal interns to assist with field, laboratory, and office work associated with its water quality monitoring activities throughout the Tri-State area. Interns will be assigned to one of three primary, seasonal projects, based on experience and interest: IEC’s Long Island Sound Monitoring Program, IEC’s New York Harbor & Tributary Monitoring Program in conjunction with NJDEP, or IEC’s Coordinated Volunteer Pathogen Monitoring Program. Interns will participate in water quality monitoring surveys, perform field measurements, collect ambient water samples, assist with laboratory analyses and coordination of assigned monitoring program. Field work will be both land and boat-based. Boat surveys currently depart from Port Washington, NY (for Long Island Sound surveys), Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York and lower Hackensack (for Harbor & tributary monitoring).

Field work requires very early morning boat cruises approximately up to twice a week and significant driving around the New York Metropolitan area to assist with sample transport. In addition to field sample collection, laboratory duties will include filtration of water samples, equipment calibration and quality control activities. The intern may assist with IEC’s other programs, including continuous in-situ monitoring. The intern may also assist with the preparation and organization of reports and documents and materials related to IEC’s projects for dissemination to stakeholders and the public. The position will require approximately 37.5 hours (five days) per week, with some flexibility. This is an in-person position. This position does not include a remote work option. The anticipated start date is May 1, 2024 with an estimated end date of October 31, 2024, with some flexibility to accommodate academic schedules.

Successful candidate will have a minimum 3 years of satisfactory progress towards a bachelor’s degree in the environmental sciences, biology, or a related field, Bachelor’s degree preferred. Strong organizational skills, the ability to multi-task and pay attention to detail a must. Proven desire and ability to work outside and on a boat under a variety of environmental conditions. Valid driver’s license, and private means of transportation required. Travel costs (at standard current IRS per-mile reimbursement rate) and tolls associated with field work and sample transport using a personal vehicle will be reimbursed. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Demonstrated laboratory and field experience is a plus.
