IEC Seasonal Sample Transport Intern, 2024

The Interstate Environmental Commission seeks seasonal intern to assist with transport of samples collected in association with its water quality monitoring activities throughout the Tri-State area.  Intern will be responsible for transporting samples to IEC’s laboratory located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York and other locations, as necessary. Samples are collected by volunteer, partner organizations, or IEC staff, depending on the project. Intern will prepare coolers, bottles, labels and equipment for sampling. Assist with tracking, inventory and receipt of laboratory supplies and reagents, general upkeep and housekeeping of the lab. Intern may assist IEC staff with water quality monitoring surveys and some sample processing.  

The position will require approximately 30 hours (four days) per week, with some flexibility. This is an in-person position. This position does not include a remote work option. The anticipated start date is May 1, 2024 with an estimated end date of October 31, 2024, with some flexibility to accommodate academic schedules.

Successful candidate will have, at a minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent. Associate’s degree in science or an equivalent 2 years of coursework toward a bachelor’s degree preferred. Must possess valid driver’s license for a minimum of three years with excellent driving record and access to private means of transportation (personal vehicle). Must consent to motor vehicle report being procured by IEC’s insurance provider prior to employment.

Travel costs (at standard current IRS per-mile reimbursement rate) and tolls associated with field work and sample transport using a personal vehicle will be reimbursed.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Demonstrated laboratory and field experience is a plus.
